The Photograph That Waited For Me

I have looked at this photograph countless times. I thought I knew it.

The boy held my attention: his hands against the glass, his eyes fixed on me. Then, years later, I noticed the woman beside him, covering her face with two fingers, leaving just enough space to watch me.

How had I never seen her before?

Perhaps I had. Perhaps somewhere beneath conscious thought, I registered her presence without understanding its significance. Or perhaps some things remain invisible to us until we are ready to see them.

I have always believed that there are no accidents. Sometimes a moment reveals its meaning long after it has passed. We return to something we think we know, feel and discover that it has been holding something new for us all along.

Could it be that this photograph waited for me?

I cannot explain why I noticed her now, after all these years. I only know that I did.

And I find myself wondering whether we ever truly see everything in the moments we live—or whether some things reveal themselves only when the time is right.

The photograph hasn't changed.

Perhaps I have.
